Oliver Stone to direct movie about Sept. 11 rescue

NEW YORK -- Nearly four years after the collapse of the World Trade Center, Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone will direct a film based on the story of two police officers who were trapped in the rubble on Sept. 11.
Nicolas Cage, who won a best-actor Oscar for ''Leaving Las Vegas,'' will star as Port Authority police Sgt. John McLoughlin. McLoughlin and fellow Officer William Jimeno became trapped during rescue efforts after the collapse of the twin towers.
Paramount Pictures said the movie is expected to be released next year.
''It's a work of collective passion, a serious meditation on what happened and carries within a compassion that heals,'' Stone said in a statement Friday.
Paramount said the film also will focus on the officers' rescuers and their families. McLoughlin and Jimeno are said to be the last two men rescued.
This may be the first high profile film to tackle 9/11. But many independent films have dealt with it, including the 2002 movie "The Guys."

Hollywood gets it collective act together to present a film dealing with that tragedy and the best they can do is Oliver Stone? The guy who has never met a theme he didn't turn into a frying pan to hit people over the head with. The director Ken Russell calls "over-the top"? More importantly for Hollywood, the man who's last hit involved the NFL begin compared to Native Americans? That Oliver Stone?
To be fair, I haven't liked anything he's done since the days of "Salvador" and "Talk Radio". Actually, to be really fair, I did like parts of his other films. But I never thought the answer to Oliver Stone's cinematic excess was to shovel more money for him to make bigger, more bloated epics that somehow work Native Americans into the theme. What the man needs is someone saying "no" a lot more often.
Although I have to say, I'm looking forward to a film that deals with the Native American side of the 9/11 tragedy.

Egad! It's too soon for a 911 movie, don't you think...?
I think there is one that can be done. I just don't think the man who made the comedies "JFK" and "Alexander" is the one to do it.
Although if Nicolas Cage stops rescuing people long enough to make out with Jared Leto while listening to Donald Sutherland blather on about the military indutsrial complex, it may be worth it.
